Gujarat government on Wednesday declared that the state will not accept the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in MBBS courses.

“We have decided not to accept NEET. We have informed this to the Union government,” Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said.

NEET is an all India common entrance test for entry to medical colleges of the country proposed to be introduced in the year 2012-13 by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The MCI had asked for the opinion of different states regarding the NEET.

Gujarat government had formed a three member task force to give suggestions on how NEET will affect students of Gujarat who want to opt for medical education, Vyas said.

“The task force was formed after parents associations protested on the NEET issue,” he said adding, “The task force has given its report and on the basis of that we have decided that Gujarat will not join NEET.”

Gujarat already has a system of centralised admission for MBBS, wherein the result of class XII and GUJCET test are taken into account, Vyas said.
