Groundbreaking performed for Peugeot plant at Sanand site in Gujarat

The foundation stone-laying ceremony and bhoomi poojan of French car-maker PSA Peugeot Citroen was held at Sanand site on Thursday morning in presence of Mr. Grégoire Olivier, Member of the Managing Board PSA Peugeot Citroën and CEO of Asian Operations, Mr. Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot and Mr. Frédéric Fabre, Managing Director of PCA Motors India.

The ground-breaking ceremony signifies an important landmark for the development of Peugeot’s India project which follows the State Support Agreement (SSA) signature held in Gandhinagar on September 1st, 2011.

This new milestone is in line with Peugeot’s introduction schedule for its industrial and commercial settlement in India.

The future automotive and engine/gearbox plant will be constructed on an area of 600 acres, to which Peugeot will add a suppliers park for a global investment of Rs. 4,000 cores, approximately 650 million €.

This investment will add up to 5,000 new jobs for the automobile hub. In conjunction with this, Peugeot and the Gujarat state have the intention of creating an Automotive Skills Development Institute (ASDI) to be located within the Sanand Automotive cluster and contribute to its further growth and development.

The next step to be carried out over the coming weeks will include the completion of soil analysis, immediately followed by preliminary ground levelling works. The beginning stages of laying the foundation are scheduled subsequently.

The European car-maker will produce B-plus, C and D class cars at the 600 acre site. For the Indian market. Its model 508 will be the first to get rolled out in 2014. Of the 600 acres, about 100 acre will be used by its vendors.

Last month, American auto company Ford Motors began work on its second facility at Sanand which will roll-out the first car in 2014. Maruti Suzuki is in process to buy land for its car plant some kilometers away in Mehsana district.
