Dinsha Patel becomes the first and only cabinet minister from Gujarat in UPA2, gets portfolio of Mines

Ahmedabad, 28 October 2012

As we told you yesterday, Kheda MP in Lok Sabha and minister of state Shri Dinsha Patel has been elevated to cabinet rank in today’s union cabinet reshuffle. He has been given portfolio of the ministry of Mines with cabinet rank. Dinsha was earlier a minister of state for Mines with independent charge.

Shri Patel thus becomes the only Cabinet minister in union government elected from Gujarat.

In UPA 1 Gujarat MP Shankersinh Vaghela was made cabinet minister, but Vaghela lost the election in 2009, after which in UPA 2 no MP from Gujarat was given a chance to become cabinet minister.

Gujarat is represented by three ministers in centre at present. While Dinsha Patel is elevated to cabinet rank, Anand MP Bharatsinh Solanki and Mandvi MP Tushar Chaudhary enjoy the status of minister of state in union govt.
