SMC to give free toilet cards to over 5,000 families

Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) will give toilet cards to 4,111 families whose housing units are not suitable for construction of a new toilet. Toilet card will make it possible for them to use nearby pay-and-use toilet facility for free. Such pay-and-use facilities are operated by private contractors. SMC will bear the cost of service for those using free toilet cards. Pay-and-use toilets are already free for women and children. Toilet card holder gents will also be able to use them for free.
Year 2011 census had revealed the actual figure of families without toilet facility in Surat. Later 40,775 families were allotted housing units with toilet facility. 1952 families were given toilet facility through other schemes. Later 9,664 families were left without toilet facilities. 5,553 of them had not suitable housing unit, and therefore construction of toilet was not possible for them. They are to be given free toilet cards.
