SAUNI project: First major breakthrough likely by end of this year

SAUNI yojana launched by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi is in progress. First major breakthrough will be supply of Narmada water to Aaji dam which provides water to Rajkot city.

Design and survey for laying pipeline connecting Machchu-1 and Aaji-1 dams has already started. Works upto Machchu-1 dam are completed.

According to state water supply minister Vijay Rupani who is elected from Rajkot, 9 km works of two parallel pipelines between Khambhala and Ishwaria was completed in just 12 days. Once the design and survey work is over, the task of laying pipeline between Machhu-1 and Aaji-1 dams will be executed in same speed, may be by the end of this year.

It should be mentioned that SAUNI project intends to interconnect 115 dams of Saurashtra region with Narmada canal network. Surplus water of Sardar Sarovar dam will be offloaded in these dams. Surendranagar will become a hub for this project, as all pipelines to different dams will originate at Surendranagar. So far 3 dams are linked including Machhu-1 dam.

Ongoing works of SAUNI project are divided in nine packages.
