The airport in Surat is likely to get the name of Late Prime Minister Shri Morarji Desai. According to reports, Prime Minister office itself has moved the process in this regard, and after all procedures in Civil Aviation Ministry in Delhi, the airport will be given name as ‘Morarji Desai Domestic Airport Surat’. At the same time, Porbandar airport will be named as ‘Mahatma Gandhi Domestic Airport.
It should be mentioned that Morarji Desai was only Gujarati Prime Minister other than Shri Narendra Modi. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Surat only. Surat has a University named after a famous poet Narmad, auditorium named after son of soil and great bollywood actor Sanjeevkumar, and now airport is likely to be named after Shri Morarji Desai.
Porbandar on the other hand is birth place of Mahatma Gandhi, and therefore choice of his name is natural.
Ahmedabad airport has been named as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Sardar Patel had been lawyer and Municipality President in Ahmedabad. Bhuj airport which was earlier known as Rudramata airport has been recently renamed as Shyamji Krishna Verma airport.
