Gandhinagar
Gujarat government has today taken a decision to develop 3 ponds at a cost of Rs 40 crore for storage of water.
New water bodies will come up at Bhapi, Samla-Vadana and Devpura in Banaskantha district.
The ponds will occupy 24 hectare land. They will have joint capacity of storage of 97 crore liter water. They will ensure uninterrupted water supply to 345 villages of border district Banaskantha in north Gujarat.
When Narmada main canal is in maintenance mode, the water supply is stopped. In such case Banasksantha district’s Tharad, Diodar, Bhabhar, Vav and Sui taluka’s 345 villages and 2 towns suffer water supply problem. Three new water bodies planned will solve this issue.
New water bodies will be constructed in a way that water will be carried from canal to pond and pond to water supply sump by gravity. Thus water supply will be possible without additional power cost.
The government has also taken a decision to construct big water bodies in Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Jamnagar districts – one in each of three.
The size of new water bodies will be big enough to ensure 15-day water supply when Narmada canal is in maintenance mode.
