Surat Thani Governor on visit to Surat, four MoUs to be inked
July 21, 2016
Surat: There’s Surat city in Thailand too. And Surat city in Thailand is also located on the bank of river Tapi. Is this coincidence? No, it’s not.
King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), the ruler of Thailand had traveled to Surat in south Gujarat in initial years of 19th century. He was so impressed by Surat city and its port in Gujarat that he changed the name of his country’s ‘Fund Dong river’ to Tapi and also changed the name of ‘Chaiya province’ to Surat Thani on July 29th, 1995.
Today the Governor of Surat Thani is visiting Surat city in Gujarat to sign Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between two cities for sister city relationship. The MoU will include four subjects namely cultural exchange and tourism promotion, the growth of economy and trade business, spread education and exchange of students and exchange information and sharing the best practice with each other.
