AAI green signal for expansion of Surat airport; international connectivity likely this year

Surat: Airport Authority of India(AAI) has approved expansion plan for Surat airport terminal building from existing 3,600 sq m to 9,346 sq m width doubling of first floor carpet area to 6,172 sq m. The expansion work which is likely to kick off soon will also see addition of three aerobridges. In another development, AAI western region office had requested custom notified airport status for Surat airport to make international operations of passengers and cargo possible here. The Central Board of Excise and Customs(CBEC) has agreed to offer custom facility here in its response, provided that adequate infrastructure is in place. With completion of modification of existing terminal and expansion of runway from 2,250 meters to 2,905 meters , the process which may take less than six months, limited international operations will become possible at Surat airport. Surat has at present domestic connectivity to Mumbai and Delhi. As many as 4 lakh passengers travel to international destinations via Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad.
