Surat: Prime Minster Narendra Modi today said that the diamond city of Surat should now also become ‘number one’ in the world in gems and jewelry production.

Addressing the inaugural function of a diamond unit in Ichchhapur here today Modi said,’ We have become diamond in diamond, now we should be number one in gems and jewelry as well.’

‘But it should not be only a made in India jewelry business but it should be the one with design in India affair. So much has been done in India since old times in Jewelry. We had designed jewelries according to seasons (one for monsoon and another for summer season), time of the day (different ones for morning and evening) and different for different gods like Shiva and Ganpati. The country which had done so much can do it,’ the Prime Minister said.

He said that the people associated with the diamond industry here were skilled enough to do so. Surat should take it up and his government would do the needful for it. He suggested to make consumer driven products in gems and jewelry to compel people across the world to buy it.

‘We have given enough of diamonds and polished enough of it too now move forward in the direction of gems and jewelry,’ he said.

Earlier he remembered former PM Morarji Desai, whom he said Surat had given to the country. He said that Morarjibhai had dreamt of the economic development of the country and today his soul must be feeling satisfied. He also remembered Sardar Patel and praised him for his complete vision about India.

He also praised the owner of Hare Krishna Exports diamond (the one unit of which he inaugurated today ) and his friend Savji Dholakia for his entrepreneurship on the occasion.
