Gates of Vasna barrage opened, water level in Sabarmati brought down to 132 ft

Ahmedabad: Even as heavy to very heavy rain has caused flood like situation in several districts of Gujarat, gates on Vasna barrage here have also been opened as a precautionary measure to keep the water level in Sabarmati river that flows in the middle of the city under control.

Ahmedabad city has also witnessed over 3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

According to AMC control room, the water level in the river was at 132 ft at 4 pm today, just four ft below the danger level of 136 ft. Owing to flow of rain water in the river the water level had gone up to 133ft late last night and continued to be at that level till morning today. 3 gates of the barrage were opened (two up to 2 ft and one up to one ft) to discharge the excess water at around 0930 am today. Later at around 0400 pm one of the gates (which was opened by one ft) was closed. At around 4 pm total discharge from water through barrage was over 3600 cusec while the normal inflow through Narmada canal was a little over 1000 cusec.

Owing to rain total seven places in the city have also seen water logging including Chandkheda, Geeta Mandir, Swastik crossing, and Chandrabhaga society in Nava Vadaj.

Notably some of the dams in Saurashtra including Demi 2 in Tankara of Morbi district have overflown while many others were witnessing heavy inflow. Several gates of Demi 2 have also been opened to discharge the excess water. Two gates of Und dam in Jamnagar have also been opened for similar reasons.
