50,000 to 1 lakh cu sec release from Dharoi dam tonight: Riverfront walkway closed for public

Ahmedabad: Due to continuous rainfall in catchment area, Dharoi dam in North Gujarat is witnessing continuous inflow. At 3.00 pm today the level of water in Dharoi dam was 611.15 ft. The dam was witnessing 1,41,000 cu sec inflow during the afternoon.According to the Superintendent Engineer of Dharoi dam the inflow was constant and there was all possibility of level reaching 617 ft at around 11.00 pm. In such circumstances initially 50,000 cu sec water is expected to be released. Later the discharge will be in proportion to inflow.
The administration has alerted those living/doing activities in low lying areas on the bank of river Sabarmati.
A walkway (lower promenade) of Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad has been closed for public as precautionary measure.
Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner stated: Due to release of water in measurement of 50,000 to 1 lakh cu sec from Dharoi dam, the level of water will rise from around 5.00 am tomorrow. As precautionary measures people should not go to low lying areas of river. Those in Chandrabhaga and Indira bridge area are advised to move to safer areas. Sabarmati Riverfront walkway should not be accessed. None should go to riverbed in downstream areas of Vasna barrage such as Vanzara, Bakrol, Fatehwadi and Gyaspur.
