Sabarmati Riverfront walkway submerges as water released from Dharoi dam arrives

Ahmedabad: As expected, over 1 lakh cu sec water released from Dharoi dam in North Gujarat has reached Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad at around noon today via Lakroda weir.
Sabarmati Riverfront walkway (lower promenade) on both sides is submerged at present under the flowing river water.
Riverfront park which is located on upper promenade has been closed for public.
Lower promenade/walkway was closed for public last evening as precautionary measure.
Chandrabhaga bridge slum which is also known as Vadaj slum has been vacated. This slum is located at the level lower than the surface of river Sabarmati. It was flooded in the past too when over 1 lakh cu sec water was released from Dharoi dam. One of slum dwellers claimed there are 2,000 persons living in this slum pocket.
According to Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, at around noon, the river gained 8 ft increase in level while another 8 ft increase was expected.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) had already started flushing out then exiting water in river Sabarmati last evening by opening the gates of Vasna barrage.
It is expected that normal river level will be achieved again in the evening.
Sabarmati riverfront walkway will however continue to remain closed for public for longer period for cleaning purpose after normal level of river is achieved.
