41-year old, 4-term MLA Amit Chavda becomes Gujarat Congress President

Gandhinagar: 41-year old Amit Chavda, MLA from Anklav constituency in Central Gujarat has become new president of Gujarat Congress. Chavda replaces outgoing State party president Bharatsinh Solanki(65) who was on this post since March 2015 replacing Arjun Modhwadia.

4-term MLA Amit Chavda is among party’s younger lot. He is chief whip of party in the Gujarat Assembly.

Chavda is relative of Bharatsinh Solanki. He had in his public meetings during last assembly election campaign openly declared Bharatsinh Solanki as future Chief Minister from Central Gujarat. Chavda considers Madhavsinh Solanki and his son Bharatsinh as his mentors. Chavda’s grandfather Ishwarsinh Chavda was member of parliament. Ishwarsinh was father in law of Madhavsinh Solanki.

Chavda’s name has been decided for the post by party’s national president Rahul Gandhi. Rahul wanted to have new state president from a younger lot. Rahul wanted someone who has strong support in constituency and consistent winning record. As the post of Leader of Opposition has been given to Patidar caste MLA, the party wanted to appoint state president from other dominant caste group. Chavda is from OBC Kshatriya caste group. It is learnt that Congress leader Jitu Patwari who was incharge of Central Gujarat in last assembly elections and outgoing party president Bharatsinh Solanki had favored Chavda’s elevation as State party President.

Chavda was last month placed in AICC’s special invitees list. Chavda was lastly assigned the task of election observer for Congress party for Banaskantha district panchayat election. Congress was elected to power in this election.

Chavda is married to Rajkunvarba. He has one daughter Priyanka. Chavda is Diploma in Chemical Engineering(pass year 1995). He is farmer by profession. He has no criminal case record.

General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi in a statement said: The Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi has appointed Shri Amit Chavda, MLA as the President of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Shri Bharatsinh Solanki. The party recognizes the service and contribution of Shri Bharatsinh Solannki who has relinquished the responsibility as the GPCC President.
