SC extends anticipatory bail for Teesta in funds embezzlement case till May 30

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Monday extended till May 30 the anticipatory bail granted to social activist, Teesta Setalvad and her husband, Javed Anand, in connection with the Gulberg Society fund embezzlement case.
Teesta, her husband Javed Anand, and their NGO, Sabrang Trust, were accused of misappropriation of funds meant to build a memorial and provide relief for the 2002 riot victims in Gujarat.

Gujarat government submitted that it is not intending to arrest Teesta Setalvad & her husband, Javed Anand, at present in a case lodged against them for allegedly misusing the funds granted by Centre during the period from 2010 to 2013, to her NGO, Sabrang Trust.

A division bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, extended the anticipatory bail to Teesta and Javed.
The apex court also modified the Bombay High Court order granting anticipatory bail to Teesta and Javed Anand, which had asked them to file on or before May 31, 2018 the plea before appropriate court in Gujarat.
Senior counsel, Mahesh Jethmalani, appeared for the Gujarat government.

Teesta and her husband Javed, were accused of embezzling the funds meant for Gujarat riot victims.
The Gujarat police had frozen Teesta’s accounts on the wake of the allegations that she was involved in corruption.
Challenging the move, Teesta and her husband moved the apex court seeking relief.

Ms Setalvad vehemently denied the charges and claimed innocence in the case.

Denying any wrongdoing by her, Ms Setalvad refuted Gujarat government’s allegations and had told the apex court that the state dispensation had allegedly harassed her and wanted to paralyse her activities.
