Minimum – maximum sentences for snatch theft in Gujarat increased

Gandhinagar: Chain, purse and mobile snatchers will face up to ten years in jail after ordinance issued by the Government of Gujarat comes to effect.
Currently the maximum sentence is three years but following a decision taken in the last meeting of the State cabinet, the State Government today announced it has issued an ordinance and sent it to Governor proposing increase for snatching theft offences, sending a clear sign there is no place for such theft crimes in Gujarat.
‘We have amended the Indian Penal Code provisions and added 379 C and 379 D (in Gujarat ka and kha) for ‘chil zadap’ attempts,’ said minister of state for home, Pradipsinh Jadeja in capital Gandhinagar today while speaking to media persons in presence of state DGP Shivanand Jha.
‘Snatching attempt will attract Rs 25,000 fine, minimum 5 years to maximum10 years imprisonment,’ Jadeja added.
‘Snatching of chain, mobile phone, purse will attract minimum 7 to maximum 10 years imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine,’ he further said.
Jadeja said, with new provisions in effect, snatch thieves will not avail bail easily.
