Gandhinagar:The BJP government in Gujarat is likely to announce a certain area around the world famous Somnath temple, which was the seat of first among the 12 jyotirlingas (optical bodies) of lord Shiva as completely vegetarian zone ie no sale of eating of non-vegetarian food would be allowed in that area.
A senior administrative official today said that the local municipal body had passed a resolution in this regard in April this year and the local administration and SP office have also given a favourable opinion for declaration of the ‘no non-veg zone’ in at least 3 km area around the temple situated on the shore of the Indian Ocean in Prabhas Patan in Gir Somnath district.
Notably, several local Hindu outfits have also demanded that there should be complete ban on non-veg sale and consumption in the temple town on the lines of the famous Jain pilgrimage town of Palitana in Bhavnagar. Currently there were mutton and fish shops in the area.
A BJP leader also said that CM Rupani might make the announcement about Somnath soon. The government wanted to be legally flawless before making the announcement.
Notably, earlier in 2006 when Somnath was part of the then united Junagadh district the then collector had issued a notification banning sale and consumption of non-veg items within 500 meters from the temple.
