Breakthrough of first underground tunnel for Ahmedabad Metro rail project achieved

Ahmedabad: Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for Ahmedabad Metro rail project today reached Kalupur Station platform number 12.

With this the up and down line tunnel connecting 1.72 km stretch from Kalupur railway station to Apparel park in Khokhra area of eastern party of city are ready for next level of work. The TMB will now be used for Kalupur railway station to Shahpur stretch in east part of the city.

On Apparel Park – Kalupur – Shahpur route, four underground metro stations will come up. They are Kalupur, Kankaria, Gheekanta and Shahpur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on March 4 inaugurate a 6 km first stretch connecting Vastral and Apparel Park which is elevated corridor.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation managing director IP Gautam said, “this is one of the most important place that we wanted to connect. Station building is also 60-70% completed.

Highlights

Total underground tunnel: 6 km from Apparel Park to Shahpur via Kalupur

Completed: 1.72 km first tunnel from Apparel Park to Kalupur

Connecting elevated route: Apparel Park to Vastral – 6 km stretch completed. PM will open that stretch on March 4 and ride in Metro

TBMs: First TBM took 11 months, the second TBM took 9 months to complete the tunnels for up and down lines.

Now: 150 meter away from this end of tunnel, there shall be next tunnel to Shahpur which will be built by L&T. The works will start after around 15 days.
