Water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam rising again, first time due to rain water this season

Vadodara: The water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam which is the lifeline of water supply in Gujarat, is seeing rise again but first time this season due to increased inflow or rain water from Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier this year even during summers the water level had seen rise on a few occasions but it was all due to discharge of water from the hydel power generation units at IndiraSagar dam in neighbouring Madhya Prades.

An official at the Narmada flood control unit in Vadodara today said that for the first time this monsoon, the inflow has increased due to rain fall in the catchment areas of river Narmada. The water level was 119.86 m at 1pm this afternoon and was rising with inflow at 19113 cusec exceeding the outflow of 4922. It has seen a rise of 25 cm till the evening (6pm) of June 29 when it was 119.61m and started rising due to increased inflow caused by rainfall in catchment areas.

The live storage has also increased and become 1198 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) which was 20.5% of total live storage capacity of the reservoir.

An official of the SSNNL said that there was enough water for meeting the drinking and other domestic needs of the around 167 towns and more than 10000 villages that depend on our water supply.

The overflow mark of the dam has been raised from 121.92 to 138.48 after the installation and closure of 30 sluice gates in 2017.
