First conviction under Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2017, man awarded 10 years jail term, one lakh fine for stealing and slaughtering calf

Rajkot: In the first conviction under the sections of Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act 2017 that provides for lifer for slaughtering cow and its progeny, a court in Dhoraji town of Rajkot district today awarded 10 years of jail term to a man.
According to prosecution, one Salim Chadar had stolen a cow calf and it was allegedly slaughtered for feasting guests. During the investigation the accusation was found to be correct. The FSL investigation also confirmed the slaughter of the calf. One Saptahbhai Majothi had filed the complaint in this regard.
The court after completion of the hearing today awarded 10 years jail term to Salim and also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on him.
The rules for the amended act which has made the punishments much stringent that the earlier one were issued in June 2017 after passage of the related bill the same year.
The Act also states that those found guilty of illegal transportation of a cow, its progeny or beef would face a jail term of seven to 10 years and fine of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
