Water level of Sardar Sarovar Dam Reservoir has seen a rise of 45 cm in a day

Gandhinagar: The water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam, the lifeline of water supply in Gujarat, which has seen a rise of 45 cm since yesterday morning.

Due to increased inflow caused by rain in the catchment areas in Madhya Pradesh, the water level of the all important dam has reached 121.07 meter till 3 pm today. It was just 120.62 m at 8 am yesterday and 121.02 at the same time today.

According to the data released by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd’s Director Canal’s office this afternoon, the inflow has come down drastially to 5264 cuses at 3 pm and the outflow was slightly less at 5072 cusec. The inflow has come down four to five folds because of stopping of rain in the catchment area of river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Now it is expected that the water level would soon start receding a bit.

An official of SSNNL today said that if the water inflow would have continued for a week in the way water was coming in last 24 hours, there would have been a very good storage.

The live storage in the reservoir this morning was 1402.79 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) which was over 24% of total live storage capacity of the reservoir.

Earlier this year even during summers the water level had seen rise on a few occasions but it was all due to discharge of water from the hydel power generation units at IndiraSagar dam in neighboring Madhya Prades.

An official of the SSNNL said that there was enough water for meeting the drinking and other domestic needs of the around 167 towns and more than 10000 villages that depend on our water supply. Water is also being discharged for agricultural purposes since July 4.

The overflow mark of the dam has been raised from 121.92 to 138.48 after the installation and closure of 30 sluice gates in 2017.
