Lion, lioness from Gujarat sent to Assam State Zoo in specially designed rail coach

Junagadh: A pair of Asiatic lion and lioness from Sakkarbaug Zoo, one of the oldest in India, situated in Junagadh of Gujarat have been sent to the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, largest of its kind in the whole North East region situated in Guwahati under animal exchange programme.
RFO Junagadh, Suresh Bariaya today said that the Junagadh zoo would received a pair of bears from Assam in exchange.
‘The pair of lion and lioness from here were taken to Okha yesterday from where thery were sent to assam in a special rail coach through rail route,’ Baraiya informed.
Notably, Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden also known as Sakkarbaug Zoo or Junagadh Zoo is a 84-hectare zoo that opened in 1863 at Junagadh. It provides purebred Asiatic lions for the Indian and the international endangered species captive breeding program for the critically endangered species.
The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden is the largest of its kind in the North East region and it is spread across 432 acre. The zoo is located within the Hengrabari Reserved Forest at Guwahati.
