Around 50% turnout in Junagadh Municipal Corporation election amid rains; Counting on Tuesday

Junagadh: Polling is underway for general election of Junagadh Municipal Corporation, one of six municipal corporations in Gujarat today amid rounds of showers.

Main fight is between ruling BJP and main opposition Congress. Triangle contest is taking place in at least one ward where Congress rebels are contesting as NCP candidates.Counting for JMC election is going to take place on July 23 at Junagadh Agriculture University campus.

There are total 2.38 lakh registered voters eligible to cast vote across 277 polling booths in civic body polls in Junagadh. Winners are declared unopposed on 03 of total 60 seats. Polling is taking place for 57 of total 60 seats across 14 of 15 wards. 159 candidates are in fray.

By-elections were also held for the 59 seats of various taluka and district panchayats and one seat of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.

Around 49.68 per cent voting was registered. Election went on smoothly according to district collector of Junagadh collector Sourabh Pardhi.Voting was partially affected due to rains in the early hours.The highest voter turnout of 66.36 per cent was registered in ward number 8, while the lowest turnout of 36.20 per cent was recorded in ward number 11.
The BJP had wrested control of the JMC from Congress in previous election by winning 44 of 60 seats.
