Water level in Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam sees a rise of almost 5 meters in 6 days, live storage increased by almost 15%

Vadodara: Due to increased inflow caused by heavy rains in Gujarat and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, the water level in the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam reservoir, the lifeline of water supply in Gujarat situated in Kevadiya of Narmada district in central Gujarat has seen a rise of almost 5 meters in 6 days with another rise of 1.46 meter in last 24 hours.

The live storage has also seen an increase of almost 15% in 6 days ie since 6 pm of July 30 when the water level has started to rise from 121.73 m.

The water level and storage is increasing rapidly as the inflow was much much higher in comparison to the negligible outflow this afternoon.

The water level has reached the highest of this monsoon so far at 126.65 meter at 4 pm today while it was 125.19m at 4 pm yesterday.
Since 6 pm of July 30 when the water level was just 121.73 m and started rising, it has gone up by 4.92 meter and is still rising as the inflow was a whopping 95070 cusec while the outflow was just 4905 cusec.

An official at the Narmada flood control unit in Vadodara today said ‘The inflow increased mainly due to rain in the catchment areas in MP and intermediate free catchment of river Narmada in Gujarat . The water level is rising. It is now 4meters 73 cm above the earlier overflow mark of 121. 92 m,’ he informed.

The live storage of this all important reservoir which is termed as the life-line of the water supply in this western state has also increased by almost 15% in last 6 days ie since July 30. It was at 2452.07 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) at 4 pm today which was over over 42.6% of the total live storage capacity of the reservoir (5760MCM).

There was enough water for meeting the drinking and other domestic needs of the around 167 towns and more than 10000 villages that depend on our water supply.

The maximum height of the dam has been raised from 121.92 to 138.48 after the installation and closure of 30 sluice gates in 2017.
