Jio tops 4G download speed chart; Vodafone in upload in July: TRAI

New Delhi: Reliance Jio continues to lead in the average 4G download speed chart published by telecom
regulator TRAI for July. Jio achieved 21.0 Mbps average download speed in the month of
July, witnessing an improvement from 17.6 Mbps in June. Reliance Jio was the fastest 4G
operator in 2018 with highest average download speed in all 12 months. This year again, Jio
has topped the list in all 7 months so far.

Performance of Bharti Airtel dipped in July to 8.8 Mbps from 9.2 Mbps in June, according to
the data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI). Though Vodafone
and Idea Cellular have merged their businesses and now operate as Vodafone Idea, TRAI
published their network performance separately. Average 4G download speed on Vodafone
network also dipped to 7.7 Mbps in July from 7.9 Mbps in June.

Idea registered marginal improvement in average download speed from 6.1 Mbps in June to
6.6Mbps in the month of July. Vodafone topped the average 4G upload speed chart with 5.8
Mbps in July, an improvement from 5.7 Mbps in the month of June. Idea and Airtel network
registered slight decline in average 4G upload speed at 5.3 Mbps and 3.2 Mbps respectively
in July, while Jio witnessed improvement with 4.3Mbps average upload speed.

The average speed is computed by TRAI based on data it collects with help of its MySpeed
application on a real-time basis. As per TRAI latest report, the total wireless subscription in
India was over 116 crore by end of May 2019. Of the total, Vodafone Idea had maximum
share with 38.75 crore followed by Jio with 32.29 crore and Airtel with 32.03 crore. BSNL
had 11.58 crore subscribers. The report also revealed that Vodafone Idea had 3.10 crore
subscribers in Gujarat while Jio had 2.06 crore, Airtel 1.07 crore and BSNL had over 60
lakhs.
