No Impact like economic slowdown on Amazon’s business in India

Ahmedabad: E-Commerce giant Amazon’s Indian arm Amazon India today said that the ongoing economic slowdown has no impact on its business.
Talking to newsmen here Director (Category Management) Kaveesh Chawla and Director (Seller Experience) Pranav Bhasin said that the economic sluggishness has not impacted the company at all.
‘There were several reasons for it including the diversity of products, convenience for buyers and wide reach. The number of sellers on our platform is also increasing. From around 100, six years ago when we started our business in India, the number of our sellers have increased to 5 lakhs now. We now have around 20 crore products and just one and a half years ago it was just 10 crores ,’ Bhasin said.
Bhasin and Chawla had arrived here with ‘Amazon Festive Yatra’- a house-on-wheels road-show of the company travelimg 6000 km across 13 cities including Ahmedabad to showcase over 600 products before the annual heavy discount sale ‘Great Indian Festival’ from September 29 to October 4.
They said that the electronic items including mobile phones were still the first choice of buyers.
Bhasin said that 70 to 80% of the total sale was in tier 2 and 3 cities and more than half of the total sellers were from small and medium segment. The company has also taken several steps to provide online marketplace to artisans, women and youth entrepreneurs. Through its global programme, the company was also providing access to online buyers in 12 countries to its sellers.
To a query Bhasin said that the company did not bother about its competitors like Flipkart and focus on improving its own product/service. It follows the policy of zero tolerance with regard to product quality.
Chawla said that of the total sellers 50 thousand were from Gujarat and 15000 from Ahmedabad alone. Of the total over 50 fulfillment centers 2 were in Gujarat.
