Process for compensation to farmers hit by excessive rain in Gujarat begins

Gandhinagar: The process for compensation to farmers who have suffered loss of crops due to excessive rain in Gujarat this year has begun today.

Additional Chief Secretary of Agriculture Department Punamchand Parmar informed here today.

He said that toll free numbers for each of the districts have been issued in the state for farmers who have opted for crop insurance scheme. They would have to intimate about the loss of crops on these numbers within 72 hours after which the survey for damage estimates would be taken up for the next 10 days and the compensations would be paid in the subsequent 15 days.
Parmar also said that for those farmers who have not opted for the crop insurance scheme, a separate survey has been started from today itself by the agriculture department. Such farmers would be paid compensation after the survey as per the norms of the state disaster relief fund guidelines.

Notably, Guajrat this year had seen around 142% of rain during monsoon and also seeing light to moderate spells even after the withdrawal of monsoon which has caused extensive damage to crops in some areas.

Meanwhile, Agriculture minister R C Faldu said in Jamnagar that the state machinery would act promptly to see to it that the compensation was paid to the affected farmers at the earliest. He said that the excessive rain this year has caused damage to crops in the state especially to groundnut, paddy and cotton.
