Severe cyclonic storm Maha at 520 km SSW of Veraval, likely to re-curve towards Gujarat after November 4 but to weaken afterwards

Gandhinagar: The severe cyclonic storm Maha, which lay centered over east central Arabian sea around 520 km South-SouthWest of Veraval in Gujarat is very likely to intensify in to a very severe storm in next 24 hours and take a re-curve towards South Gujarat and North Maharashtra coast after November 4.

Under its impact heavy rainfall will take place in parts of South Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra region on November 6, however the ‘news of relief’ is that while approaching Gujarat coast it would weaken considerably.

Spells of light to moderate rain will also continue for at least next five days even as some parts of the state have seen moderate to heavy rain today also. From 6 am to 6pm today a total of 103 talukas of 26 districts including Ahmedabad recorded some amount of rain with maximum 84 mm in Khergam in Navsari district of South Gujarat.

Limbdi in Surendranagar has seen 67mm, Dharampur in Valsad 62mm, Khedbrahma in Sabarkantha and Kaprada in Valsad district 35mm each while Waghai in Dangs 34 mm.

Ahmedabad city has also seen an average of around 3 mm of light rain.

According to the met bulletin issued this evening here the synoptic situation, general forecast and heavy rain warnings are as follows –

SYNOPTIC SITUATION : – The Severe Cyclonic Storm MAHA (Pronounced as M’maha) over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved northwest wards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 06 hours, and lay centered at 1430 hrs IST of today over eastcentral Arabian Sea near latitude 16.8°N and longitude 67.9°E, about 520 km south-southwest of Veraval (Gujarat) and 540 km south-southwest of Diu. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards till November 4 and recurve east- northeastwards towards south Gujarat and adjoining north Maharashtra coasts thereafter. It is very likely to intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm over east central Arabian Sea during next 24 hours.

 

However, after the re-curve, it is very likely to weaken gradually while moving east-northeastwards.

The Depression over westcentral Arabian Sea moved west­-southwestwards with a speed of 27 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 1430 hours IST of today, over westcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 12.5°N and Longitude 53.8°E, close to Socotra Island and 300 km east­northeast of Bereeda (Somalia). It is very likely to move west­southwestwards towards Somalia coast across Socotra Island during next 12 hours and weaken into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area thereafter.

Dry weather very likely in remaining districts of Gujarat region, Saurashtra.
