Close on heels of onion-theft in Gujarat, now 15 sacks of ‘precious’ edible root goes missing from marketing yard

Bhavnagar: Close on heels of the ‘theft’ of sacks of onions from a market in Gujarat, now an incident of 15 sacks of this ‘precious’ commodity gone missing from a market yard has come to fore.

The 15 sacks of onion, which has turned in to a rarity and luxury of sorts for the kitchens of middle-class people due to its sky-rocketed prices, containing the edible root in excess of 750 kg were found missing in the Bhavnagar marketing yard today.

The onions sacks belonged to a farmer who had brought it to sell. It was not yet clear as to who stole or took away the sacks.

Chairman of the marketing yard Naru Ahir, however said that the onion sacks must have been mistakenly loaded as excess in some vehicle. ‘As we keep a record of all the vehicle entries, there was no question of theft but it would be found out where the missing sacks have gone. I feel that these sacks must have been loaded by-mistake in any of the carrier trucks that take out the goods from the yard to markets,’ he said.

Notably almost a week ago five sacks of onions containing over 250 kg of it were stolen from a market in Palanpur Patiya area of Surat.

Price of onion which was in the range of Rs 20 to 40 a kg a few months back has reached Rs 100 per kg due to non-seasonal rain in its main producing regions.
