Coast Guard rescues fishermen in distress off Gujarat coast

New Delhi: Around 22 Indian Fishing Boats carrying 264 Indian Fishermen from various parts of southern states were caught in cyclonic low depression off Lakshadweep. These boats had gone out to sea for fishing in the first week of Nov 19 and were stranded since early morning of 02 Dec 19.
On receipt of this information, Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC), Mumbai immediately informed all merchant vessel transiting through that area by e-mail and other means for providing assistance. Simultaneously, Coast Guard ships were also diverted for rescue operations.
250 fishermen were rescued by merchant vessel and transferred to Coast Guard ship which took them to Goa. They were handed over to fisheries department for returning them to their native places.
14 fishermen were rescued by MV Miura, however, due to paucity of time and to meet her next port of call Kandla timing (ETA) she requested Indian Coast Guard to handover fishermen at Gulf of Kutch.
Indian Coast Guard Station Mundra deployed ICGS C-403 to RV, MV Miura at sea and takeover these 14 fishermen. On 06 Dec 19 at around 2040 hrs ICGS C 403 brought these fishermen to Mundra and their medical checkup was carried out by Medical Officer of Coast Guard Station Mundra and all were found fit with no injuries. On 07 Dec 19 they were handed over to representative of Tamil Nadu Fisheries department who had reached Mundra on information by Indian Coast Guard. These fishermen are being taken back to their native place safely after undergoing this life threatening incident.
