Another Congress leader arrested in Gujarat in connection with violence during anti CAA/NRC protests

Palanpur: Another Congress leader has been arrested in Gujarat in connection with violence and attempted attack on police during protest against CAA/NRC in Chhapi town of Banaskantha district in North Gujarat.

Dy SP of Palanpur division A R Jankat, who is also the Investigating officer of the case, today said that Yasin Banglawala (around 50 years old) was arrested from his home town Kanodar last evening.

Banglawala is the Banskantha district Congress committee vice president.

Kanodar is around 7 km from Chhapi where on December 19 a mob of people from mostly minority community adamant to take out a rally against CAA and NRC without official permission had laid a siege of sorts on policemen present there. A video showing them trying to push a police vehicle upside-down had gone viral.

A case against 22 named accused including Banglawala and a mob of 3000 unknown people was lodged in Chappi police station as case number 74/2019 under various sections of the IPC for rioting (142, 147, 149, 152, 153), criminal conspiracy 120 (B), 308 ( Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and section 3 of the Damage to Public property act.

The DySP said that with the arrest of Banglawala, so far a total of 49 culprits in the case have been nabbed.

Over 50 people including local Congress corporator Shehzad Pathan were nabbed in connection with a similar but more violent incident in Shah-e-Alam area in Ahmedabad city the same day. Over 25 policemen were injured during violent protests there.
