Gandhinagar: The Labour and Employment department got the merger of the Rural Labour Commissioner with the Labour Commissioner.
The Rural Labour Commissioner was established in 1980 following recommendations of the Satem Commission in an attempt to ensure that unorganized agricultural workers get the minimum wages as prescribed by the government from time to time. Offices of the Labour Officer and Assistant Labour Officer are functioning in 33 districts and in 116 talukas respectively under the Gujarat Rural Labour Commissioner, Gandhinagar.
“The Rural Labour Commissioner was established for the benefit of agricultural workers. However, the Government of India implemented the Unorganized Workers Social Security Act 2008, which also covers agricultural workers. In view of the changed scenario, we feel that there is no need to have a separate set up of Rural Labour Commissioner,” Vipul Mittra IAS, additional chief secretary, Labour and Employment department, said.
Mittra said that the merger of Gujarat State Social Welfare Board and the cadre of Rural Labour Commissioner to be used for carrying out the Board’s activities.
“Moreover, class I and II officers and class III and IV employees in both the Rural Labour Commissioner and Labour Commissioner belong to the common cadre. There are unlikely to be any cadre related service issues because of the merger of the two, and also address the issue of recruitment for Gujarat State Social Welfare Board “, he said further.
