Gujarat govt. contemplating to provide free travel facility to around 8 lakh construction workers

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government is contemplating to provide free travel facility for work to around 8 lakh workers of the construction sector in the state, Additional Chief Secretary of Labour and Employment department, Vipul Mittra today said.

In his inaugural address at the two day seminar on Labour Code with special reference to Wage Code and Occupational Safety and health code at Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute here, Mittra said that the government was contemplating to provide free travel facility to the work place from the place of living for the construction sector workers.
‘It is being planned to make some kind of an arrangement with the State Road Transport Corporation and other institutions like Ahmedabad and Surat Municipal Corporation run bus services for the free travel facility to the workers. They could be issued free passes and the government would pay it to the Corporations. Most of the workers are very poor and they have to spent a good sum on traveling. The state government is thinking of lessening their burden,’ he said.

The ACS also said that the state government was also in the process of creating large scale dormitory facilities for the laboueres. A provision for workers dormitory units in the Industrial areas have been made and it has been planned to construct at least 500 such dormitory hostels in four to five years. For it the government would provide various kinds of subsidies.

On the occasion Deputy Labour Commissioner, Central Labour Service, Dr Onkar Sharma and Director of Labour in Gujarat Bhagya Verma also expressed their views. Dr Sharma elaborated on why the central government has decided to amalgamate 44 existing central labour laws in to four codes.
