Pirana waste mound to be history in 2022; 65 acre land on national highway worth Rs 1000 crore to be reclaimed: Commissioner

A small hill of garbage in Pirana waste ground of city will be completely removed and land will be surfaced within two and half years from now, said municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra. He said daily 4300 tonne waste is being removed from this ground. In one and half year, one crore tonne waste will be removed.

For last forty years, this was the place where garbage of entire Ahmedabad city was unloaded. Now 12 machines are working for removal of this garbage. While a big machine removes 1,000 tonne garbage every day, the other 11 small machines remove 6,000 tonne garbage per day. 2.75 lakh tonne waste has been removed in last 6 months which has resulted into opening of around 8.5 acre land (21 bigha). As this 65 acre land is located next to the national highway, its value is estimated at Rs. 800 to Rs. 1000 crore. The target date for removal of entire mountain of waste is 22 August 2022. It was National Green Tribunal which had asked Amdavad Municipal Corporation(AMC) and State government to remove this waste mound.

Nehra in a tweet said, so far 10 lakh tonne waste has been removed and 8.5 acre land has been reclaimed. Daily 6,000 tonne waste is being removed which shall be 10,000 tonne by the end of this month. Pirana waste mound will be a history by 15 August 2022. Initial estimated cost of erasing this mound was in range of Rs. 600-800 crore, but the task will be done within Rs. 100 crore.
