Two more river bridges closed for all kinds of traffic; only two river bridges open now in core Ahmedabad
May 03, 2020
Ahmedabad: Two more river bridges in the city have been closed for traffic. One flyover bridge has also been closed for traffic. The latest bridges to be closed for traffic movement are Ambedkar bridge which connects Paldi area to Danilimda/Shah Alam/Maninagar, and Sardar bridge which connects city’s Paldi area to Jamalpur. Ashok Bhatt flyover which connects Sardar bridge to GSRTC bus station road has also been closed for traffic.
Jamalpur and Danilimda are some of worst affected Covid19 hotspots or red zones. The AMC has earlier closed Nehru bridge, Dadhichi bridge and Gandhi bridge for traffic movement in order to contain the eastern portion and especially the wall city area which is very badly affected by Covid19 infection.
Closure of Sardar bridge is historic as even during worst riots (including year 2002 Godhra riots) this road is kept open and alive by administration as the road connects Western Ahmedabad to GSRTC bus station and also the railway station. However in present situation, even GSRTC bus station and Kalupur railway station are non-operational barring for special ferry services.
City Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra in his online briefing said, ‘Gandhi bridge, Nehru bridge, Dadhichi bridge, Sardar bridge and Ambedkar bridge are closed for all types of traffic. Whether one has pass for movement or not, whether one is on essential duty, whether one is part of AMC, Police, health department, he/she would not be allowed to use these bridges. They will need to use Subhash bridge and Vivekanand bridge.’
‘Jamalpur ward has witnessed 33% deaths of all over Ahmedabad. The area has over 100 cases. The citizens of Jamalpur and wall city area are requested to give full support as any lethargy on their part can put the city in very big danger. Ramzan celebration needs to be done within home. You venture out in the night, which you must not. As per the Centre’s order, none should go out during 7 pm to 7 am time period. Even beyond this time limit, one should go out only when extremely essential,’ Nehra said.
