Gujarat facilitates the movement of 2.20 lakh workers through special trains

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has facilitated the movement of more than two lakh migrant workers through more than 180 Special Sharmik trains maximum in the country, followed by other states, since the inter-state movement of workers and other stranded persons was allowed from May 1, ACS Vipul Mittra said.

“We started with just two trains in a day, and have scaled up the number of 50 now. We are working closely with Railways and the receiving states to arrange for at least 50 special trains every day for the next few days,” Mittra said further.

As many as 180 trains, carrying nearly 2.20 lakh workers to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand had left from Gujarat until yesterday. Today, more than 50 trains planned carrying around 60,000 workers will be departing from Gujarat.

The number of special trains run in the last eight days will cross 180, and the number of passengers ferried in excess of 2.20 lakh, said Mittra, adding that Gujarat is way ahead of other states as far as the number of trains run, and the number of workers transported.

Of the 130 Shramik special trains run as of Friday, 85 were to Uttar Pradesh, 21 to Bihar, 16 to Odisha, and four each to MP and Jharkhand.

While the majority of the trains have departed from Ahmedabad (23) and Surat (22), special trains have also been run from Vadodara, Anand, Bharuch, Nadiad, Palanpur, and several other cities.
