Centre approves a new medical college at Godhra

Gandhinagar: The Government of India has sent a letter to Gujarat government conveying approval to a new medical college at Godhra in Central Gujarat at a cost of Rs. 325 crore.

60 per cent of this amount will be spent by the Centre while 40 per cent will be spent by the State government.

A 300-bed hospital will be required by start of the first academic year. The State government will upgrade existing hospital for this purpose, expenditure of which is part of Rs. 325 crore sum approved.

State health department had asked Revenue department to allot suitable land for construction of hostel for proposed medical college. This process has been completed and a 20 acre land has been allotted near Godhra for construction of hostels and other new required buildings in future.

With approval to a new medical college in Godhra, the total number of seats for MBBS education in Gujarat will be 6,000 across 33 medical colleges including proposed college at Godhra.

Gujarat government’s proposal to approve two more medical colleges at Morbi and Khambhaliya are pending. Earlier the Centre had approved medical colleges at Navsari, Rajpipla ad Porbandar also.

Sharing these details, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who is also Health minister of the State, said union health minister Dr. Harshvardhan had called him around 10 days ago and sought details regarding the proposal that were shared by the State.
