Former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel passes away

Gandhinagar: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel passed away today.

Keshubhai’s son Bharatbhai said, ‘Keshubhai suffered from Coronavirus in the month of September but later he was recovered and tested Covid-19 negative. However due to impact of Covid-19, later his health was gradually deteriorating. We hospitalised him twice and brought him back to home, however today morning due to reduced pulse and oxygen level, he was taken to a private hospital in Ahmedabad but he couldn’t survive.’

According to Dr. Akshay, Chief Administrative Officer of private hospital, Keshubhai arrived at the hospital at 10.55 am today with sudden cardiac arrest condition. He was unconcious and attended by cardiologist, pulmonologist and other doctors who tried to revive him for an hour or so. He was declared dead at 11.55 am. He died here in the hospital. He was suffering from Coronavirus infection in the month of September. The reason of his death today is sudden cardiac arrest. He was suffering from diabetese, hypertension, he had underwent heart surgery in the past. He was around 94. These all comorbid conditions were also there.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani while addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Gadhda assembly seat, paid tribute to Keshubhai Patel on his demise.

A special meeting of the State cabinet was convened to pay tribute to late leader.

Keshubhai Patel (born 24 July 1928) was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 1995 and from 1998 to 2001. He had been a member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly six times. He had been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the 1980s. He subsequently left the BJP in 2012 and formed the Gujarat Parivartan Party. He was elected from Visavadar in the 2012 state assembly election but later resigned in 2014 due to ill health and dissolved his Parivartan party.

In the last phase of his life, Keshubhai was active as Chairman of Shri Somnath Trust.

As a mark of respect to the departed leader, State mourning was observed for one day on 29 October and national flag was half masted throughout the State. His funeral was done in Gandhinagar based crematorium after guard of honour.
