Rajkot covid hospital fire incident: Five directors booked

Rajkot: Five doctors have been named in the case related to the deaths of five Corona patients in a fire incident in Uday Shivanand Hospital in Rajkot on November 27. All five doctors booked by police are directors of a company namely Gokul Life Care Private Ltd, that was operating the hospital.

Five people had died after a fire broke out at Uday Shivanand Covid hospital in Rajkot. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered a judicial probe into the incident. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. State Home Ministry had separately ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe this incident.

Though there are names of five doctors in FIR, police said not all five are to be arrested. Only those whose name emerge as accused during investigation will face arrests. The arrests will take place after covid reports of accused are found negative.

Police said it has started questioning the directors of Gokul Life Care Private Ltd, a company under which the hospital was functioning. Dr. Praash Modha, Dr. Vishal Modha and Dr. Vishal Karmata.

Police said Dr. Vishal Modha had applied for license of covid hospital and he appears a main decision maker. Modha had received license to run Uday Shivanand hospital as Covid hospital on 15 September.

Manoharsinh Jadeja, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rajkot City shared these details and said, police had found number of irregularities in Uday Shivanand hospital, such as there was no exit door, ICU door was 1 meter wide instead of prescribed 2 meter, the building plan was not as per national code prescribed for hospitals, the staff was not trained to operate fire fighting equipment installed in the hospital and therefore only 1 fire extinguisher could be used, written plan and SOP were not found for emergency situation.

The hospital had 57 beds. There were 33 indoor patients admitted at the time of fire incident. 11 of them were in ICU. 5 of them died in fire while 6 were rescued.
