Twitter Trend #WeWantKarnavati demands for renaming ‘Ahmedabad’ as ‘Karnavati’

Gandhinagar: A huge twitter storm containing over 77,000 tweets (as on 9 pm on 3rd March) was witnessed today with hashtag #WeWantKarnavati, demanding the name of the city Ahmedabad to be changed to Karnavati, the erstwhile name of the city.

Ahmedabad residents joined by thousands of people nationwide, through this trend urged to restore the city’s name to Karnavati.

The twitter trend was started on Wednesday on 3rd March, 2021 and many people have started the petitions regarding the same on change.org which are addressing to various State and Central level authorities.

People are asserting through the twitter trend that ‘Ahmedabad’ should be renamed as ‘Karnavati’ because intolerant, bigot and fanatic Sultan Ahmed Shah had renamed the original city ‘Karnavati’ as ‘Ahmedabad’ on 26th February, 1411 and by doing so tried to replace the original culture and civilization. There are number of misdeeds of Ahmed Shah recorded in history including his attack on Rudra Mahalay Shiv Mandir in Sidhpur in North Gujarat. The Shiv Mandir is presently in ruined condition.

Some Tweets have also used the term ‘Invader’ for Ahmed Shah and stated that it’s time for restoration of city’s real historic name and to show the glory of real Gujarat.

TV Actor Gajendra Chauhan who is known for playing the role of Yudhishthira in the historical TV series Mahabharat of B.R. Chopra, have also supported this trend on twitter. He mentioned in his tweet that Ahmedabad name signifies an invader who looted us, killed our people but Karnavati signifies our glory and culture.

Many tweets are addressing and mentioning BJP leaders including Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and also PM Narendra Modi. One tweet asserts that Ahmedabad name is a historical mistake and real name of this progressive city is Karnavati and now it’s time to rectify this mistake. It’s worth noting that Chief Minister Rupani has in a reply to opposition MLA Virji Thummar today in the State assembly said that the State government has not sent any proposal to the Centre seeking renaming of Ahmedabad as Karnavati.

A Tweet also claimed that the demand of renaming of Ahmedabad was originally made by Veer Vinayak Savarkar.
