Press needs to be responsible on their part: Advocate General to High Court

Gandhinagar: Referring to one of recent fake news items largely run by media, the Advocate General today told the High Court that press (media) needs to be responsible on their part.

The media had run a fake news that teachers working with the government in Surat were asked to go to crematoriums and count the dead bodies cremated there daily. After running this news story all the day, the media had late in the evening reported that such order was reversed by the government later.

The advocate general during hearing of Suo Motu PIL told a bench headed by the Chief Justice, ‘Position isn’t very happy but state govt’s role is very much determined, to tackle the pandemic. We need support from the people at large, media.. In one particular (news) item, teachers in Surat were asked to count dead bodies. The whole Surat Municipal Corporation administration was curious to find out who ordered that. Commissioner had never ordered, collector had never ordered. It is not understandable from where did the order come! When commissioner officially approached the press, press said, some reporters who have reported, those reporters are not available to you. Press needs to be responsible on their part. They should publish both the sides.’
