BRTS corridor in Surat is now longest in India
July 19, 2021
Surat: Surat Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) route has emerged as the longest BRTS corridor in the country with 108 kms length after the recent launch of Pal-Umra bridge over river Tapi.
Construction of Pal-Umra bridge has completed the connectivity of the BRTS buses network in the city. The construction of Pal – Umra river bridge was started in year 2015 but it was halted due to litigations over land acquisition related issues. Finally, the river bridge was opened recently after the Gujarat High Court order paved way for land to be cleared. The new bridge has helped to complete the BRTS route network in the city.
Due to the halt in construction of this bridge, the connectivity of Rander Zone and Athwa zone was broken, which was finally resolved after the launch of the bridge. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had designed a BRTS route connecting each zone of the city. Last year, due to border expansion, two municipalities and 27 village panchayats were added to the city limits. SMC is also planning to extend the public transport services to the newly added area.
