Somnath Mandir to undergo 3D scanning

Prabhas Patan: Shri Somnath Trust and Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board have jointly started digital access and conservation work at Shri Somnath Mandir which will enable the devotees to watch a 3D-view of the mandir through their devices from home.

The initiative also aims to enable the devotees to experience actually moving in the campus of the mandir from home with 3-Way Digital CAVE VR. It will be used at digital museums, airports and exhibitions in future.

The special technology to be used in this initiative is based on the Building Information Model (BIM). It can be used for conservation and restoration purposes. The 3D model can be used for digital museum, virtual exhibition, research, digital promotion and conservation. The 3D printed model can be also used for creating replication of the structure if need arises in future.

An informative App based on Augmented Reality (AR), a walk-through App with Virtual Reality (VR), 360-degree virtual tour and high-quality video output will be created using the data collected through the latest technology.

Rs. 5 crore project of 3D scanning is likely to complete in one year. The record of 3D scanning will be preserved with measuring data. It will make possible to create exact same identical structure in future.
