Water Storage in Kadana Marching towards Full Reservoir Level

Gandhinagar (Japan K Pathak): In a good news, particularly for the people of North and Central Gujarat, the level of water in Kadana dam has touched 124.26 meter mark as on 1 pm today. The highest level possible in this dam is 127.71 meter. Looking at continuous inflow of water from upstream areas (85,275 cusecs at 1 pm today) of neighboring State, the dam is marching ahead to achieve full reservoir level this season. At 1 pm today the storage of water achieved was 73.31 per cent.

Due to lack of sufficient rains, particularly in the months of July and August this year, the water level in Kadana dam had once gone down to 34 per cent storage only. However due to recent heavy rains in upstream areas of Rajasthan, and related release of water from Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam, the level of water has gone up significantly in this 1249.30 MCM designed storage capacity dam over river Mahi.

Kadana dam has highest designed gross storage capacity among all dams of North Gujarat and Saurashtra region. Its storage capacity is highest in Gujarat after Sardar Sarovar and Ukai dam in Gujarat.

Apart from drinking water supply, Kadana dam is also crucial also for a reason that it supplies irrigation waters to farmers through a 332 km long Sujalam Sufalam spreading canal in 7 districts located between river Mahi and river Banas. This canal is considered a lifeline for farmers of this region. DeshGujarat
