AMC may increase door-to-door waste collection charges

Ahmedabad: Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s decision making top body – the Standing Committee has received a proposal to increase the user charge for door to door garbage collection to Rs 3 per day for residential properties and Rs 5 per day for commercial properties.

The solid waste management department has put forwarded the proposal of increasing the charge for door to door garbage collection. If approved by Standing Committee and later by Municipal Commissioner, each residential property in AMC limit will need to pay Rs 1095 and each commercial property will need to pay Rs 1825 per year as per the proposed user charges.

The current user charge is Rs 1 per day for residential properties and Rs 2 per day for commercial properties for door to door garbage collection. Thus, each residential property pays around Rs 365 per year and each commercial property pays Rs 730 per year at present.

The City Mayor said that door to door waste collection rate has not been increased for last five years, and the Standing Committee will take the decision for whatever is good for the people. It’s worth noting that while collection charge has remained steady for last five years, the input cost has gone up.

The opposition leader Shehzadkhan Pathan claimed that Congress party will protest against the proposal and present a memorandum to the mayor over this issue.
