49 guilty, 28 acquitted in year 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts case

Ahmedabad: After almost 13 years of trial, a special court here today delivered its verdict in year 2008 serial bomb blasts case, holding 49 guilty. A series of bomb blasts in year 2008 in Ahmedabad had left 56 dead and 200 injured. The court has acquitted 28 other accused. Out of the 28 acquitted, 16 were given a benefit of doubt, while 12 were pronounced innocent due to lack of evidence. As many as 77 accused faced trial in the case. The Special Court will announce the quantum of punishment on Wednesday. The trial in this case had ended in September last year. Special Judge A.R. Patel delivered the verdict. The statements of 1163 witnesses have been taken so far in this case. The 77 accused are in the various jails across 7 states of the country which include 49 in Sabarmati Madhyastha jail, 10 in Bhopal jail in Madhya Pradesh, 4 in Taloja jail of Mumbai in Maharashtra, 5 in Bangalore jail of Karnataka, 6 in Kerala jail, 2 in Jaipur jail, and 1 in Delhi jail. 20 FIRs were filed in Ahmedabad and 15 in Surat in connection with serial blasts. Total 82 accused were nabbed and 8 accused are still absconding. The accused will be produced in the court after their covid-19 tests tomorrow at 10.30 am. 49 accused are declared guilty under IPC section 320 and 120. The accused who helped in the investigation are released. There is provision of the lifetime imprisonment or death penalty under section 320 of IPC. DeshGujarat
