Surat: An incident of brutal murder of a 21-year old girl by a boy has shocked the people of the city of Surat.

A 21-year old girl Grishma Nandlal Vekariya was a student of Bachelor of Commerce in JZ Shah college in Surat and resident of Lakshmidham society at Navagam in Pasodara-Patiya locality of Surat. She was originally from Nagalpur in Junagadh district of Saurashtra.

A boy who would chase and harass her since long is 18-year old Fenil Pankaj Goyani, resident of Sagar society in Kapodra area of Surat, originally from Moti Vavdi village in Gariyadhar, Saurashtra. Fenil claims to work as a fashion designer.

On Saturday evening, Fenil reached Grishma’s residence with sharp weapon in his hand. Fenil was scolded by Grishma’s uncle and brother. Agitated with this, Fenil put sharp weapon on Grishma’s neck and took her away nearby. None had thought, he would actually cause harm to Grishma or kill her. But Fenil soon slit Grishma’s throat and killed her in presence of the locals. Fenil after killing Grishma, continued to prevent anyone to come close to him or Grishma’s dead body.

Some of locals were taking video of the affair instead of trying to overpower Fenil, while some were advising him to drop the weapon and leave the place. When Grishma’s brother Dhruv and uncle Subhashbhai tried to overpower Fenil in attempt to rescue Grishma, they were also attacked with sharp weapon. Both are injured and taking medical treatment.

According to relatives, Grishma had spoken to her uncle regarding harassments from Fenil a few days ago and her uncle had scolded him.

After brutally murdering an innocent girl, Fenil in order to save self from the locals gathered there, did a drama of cutting the vein of his hand and also did another drama of consuming poison. He was taken to hospital for treatment and later arrested.

Grishma’s father is based in Nigeria. He is into diamond business. Grishma was living with her mother Vilasben and brother Dhruv. Grishma’s father was on way to India after he heard about her sad death.

The video of this incident has gone viral. The people are commenting why the locals didn’t do enough to rescue Grishma from the hold of Fenil. The people are also commenting that the murderer must get death penalty. Some are opining that the way, the minds of youths are being programmed by violent web series on OTT platforms recently, one can expect only this to happen.

Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi on a video call spoke to Grishma’s family and gave assurance of sufficient police actions and justice. He also later visited them in person. He told media persons later that any girl who faces harassment must contact the Police (and other government services like Abhayam) so that we can stop it. The incident has shocked the city.
