INS Surat: a new frontline warship of Indian Navy gets the name of Gujarat’s second largest city

Surat: It’s a good news for the city of Surat. One of two indigenously built frontline warships has been named as INS Surat.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will launch a Project 15B destroyer, INS Surat and a Project 17A frigate, INS Udaygiri, on May 17 at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai.

INS Surat is the fourth of Project 15B class of ships that are the next-generation stealth, guided-missile destroyers of the Navy being built at Mazagon Docks. It is designed in-house by the Directorate of Naval Design and 75 % of the equipment and systems were sourced from indigenous companies including micro, small and medium enterprises.

A 163 meter long, INS Surat has 7400 tone weight. It has 9900 HP diesel engine. Its speed is 56 km (30 nautical miles) with WCM-1000 generator. It has capacity to fire upto 4600 meter with 4 interceptor boats. It can accommodate 50 officials and 250 Navy soldiers. It can fire surface to air Barack-8 missiles and Brahmos missile. It has also a facility to launch RBU-6000 anti submarine rocket launcher. It has capacity to fire from )TP Melara 76 MM naval guns and AK630 stabilized remote gun.
