State Govt clears 2,537 new vacancies for 5 new medical colleges, associated hospitals

The state government has approved 2,537 new vacancies as per the regulations of the National Medical Commission in the hospitals associated with 5 new medical colleges to be opened in the state. These vacancies are over and above the total 1,088 already sanctioned. An annual expenditure of Rs 206.25 crore will be incurred once these vacancies are filled.

The National Medical Commission had refused approval to the 5 medical colleges previously citing lack of adequate facilities.

According to the National Medical Commission, each institute should mandatorily have 725 employees with 1,360 employees for the colleges and 2,265 employees for the associated hospitals, which works out to a total of 3,625 employees in total for the five medical colleges and their respective hospitals. Having already approved 1,088 vacancies, the state government had to sanction another 2,537 vacancies of which 842 are in class 1 and 2 categories, whereas the remaining 1695 are in class 3 and 4 categories.

These new vacancies will have to be filled to enable the new medical colleges to begin functioning from the new academic year. The Gujarat Medical Education Research Society (GMERS) will have to bear the expenses for these new vacancies from its own grant. While class 4 vacancies are expected to be filled up via outsourcing, vacancies for class 1 to 3 will be filled up as per rules and regulations of GMERS.
