People from border areas of Maharashtra visit Gujarat to purchase cheaper fuel

Mumbai: The people from border areas of Maharashtra purchase fuel from Gujarat due to low fuel prices in Gujarat, states ANI in a tweet.

ANI, in the tweet, further states a quote of a petrol pump owner in Valsad district of Gujarat. He said, “Maharashtra border is 2 km from here. People buy fuel from our pump as there is a diff of Rs 14/liter in petrol & Rs 3.5/liter in diesel” ANI has also attached photos of a petrol pump in the tweet. One of the photos shows a board installed outside a petrol pump stating ‘Petrol cheaper by Rs 15 than Maharashtra. Diesel cheaper by Rs 4 than Maharashtra.’

ANI has also stated a quote of a customer of the petrol pump from Maharashtra. The customer said, “I cross the Gujarat-Maharashtra border every day for my work and I usually purchase fuel from this pump. This way we save almost Rs14/liter in petrol and around Rs 3000 every month is saved.”

It’s worth noting that the Centre had reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel last year in November and asked the State governments to also reduce state level taxes (VAT) on fuel in order to give relief. While BJP ruled States had reduced VAT, most of the opposition ruled States had refused to reduce State taxes on fuel. The Centre had last week further reduced central excise on fuel and appealed once again to States to reduce State taxes on fuel. It is due to higher state taxes in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, both opposition ruled States, that people from border areas of these states visit Gujarat to fill up the tanks at quite cheaper rates.
